Google acquires reCaptcha

If you use online forms it's likely you've used a 'captcha' (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) system that prevents a computer script from using the form to send out spam.

Google has acquired reCaptcha, the captcha system that not only prevents spam but at the same time uses the text you type as the digital substitute for that word - basically the words you see as an image have been scanned from books that are being converted to a digital format however some words cannot be recognised effectively by OCR (optical character recognition) and so the words you type are substituted in. Sony's TV scrappage scheme goes live

Old TVSony, the electronics giant, kicks off a TV scrappage scheme on August 21st. Following the popular car scrappage scheme set up by the government earlier this year, customers who buy a new TV from Sony can get up to £150 off when trading in their old one.

However, details, like how old your TV must be to qualify, are unknown and there are other issues buyers need to be aware of as mentioned in this article on the IT Pro Portal web site...

Google introduces themes for GMail

There's an exciting new feature Google rolled out for its GMail users this past week: Themes. At last count there were 31 themes to choose frm, though 16 of these are just colour variations of the same theme. Still I expect there'll be shed-loads of theme designers firing up their design software to produce more.

To activate, click on the Settings link and then Themes. Click on a theme and it activates instantly.

LG Prada II phone and watch

The new mobile phone from LG, the LG Prada II (KF900), should go on sale any day now and Orange is offering the first 3,000 UK customers, for free, the Prada Link watch which connects up to the phone wirelessly to inform the wearer of incoming calls, the person calling and sounds an alarm when the phone goes out of range.

After the first 3,000 customers the watch will be sold for an extra £200.
